tonight the nfl's regular officiating crews will be calling the game. at the stroke of midnight the league and referees ended a three month lockout of the officials. the deal was struck after two days of marathon negotiations and controversial call to the end of monday night's game. after a series of miscalls, run ins with coaches and players, and on field confusion, the nfl referees are heading to the sideline. the league and officials union agreed on a tentative eight year contract that will put the normal officiating crews back on field. goodell said we look forward to having the finest officials in sports back on field. now it's time to put the focus back on the teams and players where it belongs. >> green bay will have a hard time. >> the two sides got serious about the negotiations after monday night's game between the packers and seahawks, a blown

call on the last play of the game cost green bay the victory. under the new deal the average pay for the league's refs will rise from $149,000 a year in 2011 to $173,000 next year and $205,000 by 2019. the agreement includes changes to the officials benefits package. some nfl players are glad to see the well refs return. >> we need those guys. they have experience. they have an eye for the game. they understand the players, the coaches, the dynamics of the game. >> after a three month lockout and no game action since last winter will the officials be ready? >> we're aware of the news rules. we've been working on tests and keeping ourselves in shape and we're ready to go at a moment's notice. we could from our perspective do it. it would be up to the league. >> while the regular refs will be on the field for tonight's game the deal is not done yet. the contract has to be ratified

nikkei gained half of a percent while the hang seng rose 1%. the housing market continues to make a slow recovery. sales of new homes fell 0.3% last month from july but the medium price of homes during the same time increased by more than 11% to $256,000. that's the biggest one month gain on record. low mortgage rates are fueling the sales of homes. the mixed housing report and news about the growing economic unrest in europe pushed wall street stocks lower. the dow tumbled 44 points on wednesday while the nasdaq lost 24. more american airlines employees will take early buyouts, about 1600 mechanics and maintenance workers could get some $12,000 to $22,500 to leave. 1,200 baggage handlers are expected to follow suit. american filed for bankruptcy protection and offering buyouts in an effort to reduce layoffs.

fewer companies plan to expand hiring. a survey by the business round table suggests 29% of its member ceos plan to increase hiring over the next six months. that's down from 36% in june when the group released its last survey. ceos are concerned about the economic slow down in china and europe and the possibility of a tax increase here at home in the new year. two major companies are planning a radical change in the way they provide health coverage to their employees. the "wall street journal" says sears will give its workers a fixed sum of money and allow them to choose their medical coverage and insure from an online marketplace. owners of red lobster will do the same. the move is similar from a change of company sponsored pension plans to 0401(k) plans. myspace is trying to make another come back and it's hoping singer justin timberlake can help. he's appearing in a new video

roger goodell got 70,000 voice mails which jump started the negotiations between the league and the union once again. in other news, more serious news, d.c. police have arrested three people in the august 18 brutal attack on capitol hill which left a 29-yard man unconscious -- 29-year-old man unconscious. >> after the beating late that night thomas mathis lay bloody. the suspects then went and attacked three other people. >> reporter: he is the father of a 22-month-old baby. he was attacked after he attended a nats game and stopped at this local bar. he was assaulted as he walked home, found on this porch so beaten and incoherent, police thought he was having a seizure. serious brain surgeries, coma, critical condition, now mending
